Danish eller dansk?

Dansk_1 The Danish People's Party (Dansk Folkeparti) has presented a bill, which is being read in the Danish Parliament (Folketinget) today. In short they want to legislate about the use of the Danish language in for example universities. They want the Danish language to be the primary language by law in public institutions and in research. If we do not legislate in this area the Danish language will disappear in the future - they argue. The Danish Language Association (Dansk Sprognævn) is not surprisingly supportive of their arguments. The sinner is of course the English language, which at the Danish universities and in many companies is the primary language today. This got me thinking. Are we in STAGIS in fact a treat against the Danish language? We write our blog in English and our website too. Are we slowly but surely putting the Danish language in its grave? Maybe. As a corporate language anyway. But if you want to have clients or stakeholders beyond the Danish boarders are you not in the need of communicating in another language than Danish? After all this language is only spoken by about five million people worldwide. What do you think: Should STAGIS continue to blog in English? And this way pay our small contribution to the slow death of the Danish language. Eller skal vi begynde at blogge på dansk?

Hide the sweets!

Slikpaper_1 Okay - the news is out (again): Danish people are fat! On Anita Bay Bundegaard´s blog she writes about the facts about the state of the 350.000 Danes that potentially could die from health issues related to being overweight! In the article there is a few ideas of to how we can change this unhappy situation. Some blame the supermarkets for lurring us in to buying candy while standing in the queue, because thats where the candy is conveniently placed. (The politicians (still) talk about changing VAT (moms) so that fruit and greens are cheaper and candy more expensive). I personally don't think that hiding (!) the candy from us in the store will work. If im low on sugar at 6.p.m. - I will find the candy! The reason why its difficult buying healthy food in Danish supermarkets is because the "easy to grab" food is more or less non existing (and no Irmas sloopy pasta salads doesnt count). We could learn something from French and English supermarkets such as Tesco´s. They have unlimited rows of healthy quick eats which are of a really great quality. So it does actually happen in Europe - other countries can make good food available. So instead of blaming everyone else - why don't we blame ourselves for not demanding better food?

Success after four months of strategy and commucation work: 170% growth

Askovblog_small
Just a brief note on one of our clients in the educational sector: Askov Højskole. We've been blogging a bit about them before and to be quite frank it didn't look good when we started out together with principal Hans Rosenquist back in september. But things are changing. From just 20 participants, an all-time low through the schools 141-year history. This spring the school hosts 54 participants.
A new strategy focusing on the professional ability to tell stories and the development of the participants own personal stories as well as a new to-the-point identity has proved the schools revival.

Check out the story on the local TV2 Syd. Or read some of the experiences of Mette and Catrine who's been blogging for a couple of months.

DRRB - the danish advertising association

Bk03jpgI had a great meeting with Bjørn Karsholt, the director of DRRB (Danske Reklame- og Relationsbureauers Brancheforening), the danish advertising association today. The agenda was first and foremost if STAGIS should join the 80-odd agencies in the association. I thought about that since 1997, the founding year of "Stagis Advertising Agency" as we were called back then. Once in a while (lets just say not every year - but still a couple of times) I've been considering the idea but it never really seemed convincing. And then in 2002 I changed the name of the game as well as the company. If one of my dear ones from STAGIS calls you they'll say "...from the design- and communications company STAGIS..." (or some derivative thereof as it tends to be quite long...!). There are a few reasons for this change. First of all I believe that we live in times and await a future in which the idea of "reklame" is finding less and less of a raison d'etre, both because of the technical levers it's using and because of the belief-system behind it.

As my mentor Mogens once explained (pardon if you find this too far-fetched, it's a specialty of Mogens - check the 1986 entry of his CV and you'll understand why, personally I love it because it makes so much sense): The danish word "reklame" which is used in the sense "advertising" derives from (I'll leave out a two other explanations incl. the american as they don't really suit my purpose here - blogging is subjective bliss) the latin "clamo", "I scream" and "re", "repetition", hence repeated screaming.
Picture_1_7No wonder if you channel-surf when you see the same happy-jumper baby smiling all happy because of the new Pampers crossing your TV for the 235th time.
It builds "top-of-mind" and a million books have been written about it. I too remember Pampers but haven't bought a single one. Because I don't need it. Some are starting to argue that things are more complicated, there's more to life than repeated yelling and top-of-mind. So a few years back I thought I'd try and do something that goes a bit beyond happy faces and repeated claims. Something that involves people, helps them talk, collaborate and express who they are. Let's keep it short this time: Communication comes from latin "Commune", meaning "Community". As Mogens blessed it, "leave it to Kunde and the others to undertake their hillbilly understanding of branding - you do identity, Nikolaj, the real thing!". Or as we would later call it; Authentic thing.

Back to the meeting: But all these blokes don't do innovative stuff, I claimed, they just do ads and more ads and as my old art director-mentor Jan used to say "same shit, other wrapping". Bjørn didn't agree. One of our members helped Interflora start delivering wine instead of only flowers, he replied. Touché, Bjørn! (I didn't bring into the conversation if they could please expand their 1-hour-service to include roses - seems like a good idea if you want to send roses to someone on a sunday or any day for that matter and feel that life is too short for letting LOVE wait another day)

We've already got the legal advice we need, the car-rental is cheaper through our filmproduction-company-deal, the insurance is not going to get cheaper... The list goes on forever. So, left to consider is the idea of more network (with the "re-claimers", not to forget, there's even a network for the young agency-owner-types like me) on one side and the hazard of becoming associated with the group of businesses that have a reputation ranking somewhere between used car salesmen and the real-estate agents. But hey, maybe I'm all wrong here? Maybe our clients (or the ones we don't have yet) will consider STAGIS much more interesting if we're part of DRRB? Maybe everyone will start calling? What do you think? Should STAGIS join?

Clamo, clamatis, omnes clamamus pro glace lactis!

PS: I've put this post in the category "Creativity in Business" - the question is wether this is the right category for the danish advertising agencies?

Happy Hour is 9 to 5

Cover
Just stumbled on "Happy Hour is 9 to 5" by Alexander Kjerulf on Thomas' blog. Seems interesting. Didn't read it yet, though. Last spring we did a project on happiness with Lars Ginnerup. Was fun. Happiness at work is not something that falls down from the sky - it's something you can think about, work with, develop. And now the idea of positive psychology seems to be finally hitting Denmark!

Kun Kortfilm
international short film festival in Copenhagen

Handstat

Want inspiration for your next business initiative? Try something different! Visit one of the few select places that show something like 80 short films over the next few days in Copenhagen. All the new ideas start here and in a year (well, maybe less) you'll see all the same ideas and tricks in tv-commercials and feature films - stolen by the older, richer so-called creatives.

The initiative is called "KunKortfilm" and is run by filmPLATFORM. Read more about it on www.filmplatform.dk.
