Master of Reality

Now its not only enough to have courses in university regarding game theory and the likes. As read on the Sprinwise site, Indiana University is now offering a course to their students in reality tv that covers areas such as legal, historical, ethical, psychological, sociological and economic perspectives. Jacob_kjeldberg_01_200wI´m not sure yet - but if there is a title called Mater of Reality - I´m going to start over my current studies in communication and go to Indiana. In case (sur real) reality is to much for you there is always the option to join a "Second Life" which is a new 3D online digital world which is "imagined, created and owned by its residents" as it is officially explained on the web site. Current number of residents today: 1,678,096. Have we really created such a nasty world with boring identities that people want to go and live a parallel 3D world or Im I just not getting it because I have never been addicted to playing Counter Strike and the likes?! What ever happen to - not the sur real or 3D - but "normal" reality?!

Visit from the free Belarus-press

Standard1

Today Birgitte and I got a visit from far away. The editor and a reporter from the belarussian "Belarus and Market" came to visit. They are visiting Denmark to receive help on the development of their weekly newspaper which they are fighting to publish in a country where it's not possible to speak freely about personal views on politics etc. We discussed the design of their newspaper as well as the possibilities of collecting and using pictures from the readers. Just getting more than a few pictures in each edition of the paper is a challenge as they don't have the ressources to buy pictures or send out a photographer to cover a story. One of the difficult things about using public journalism in this case is that the editor is responsible for anything pulished in the context of the paper - even if it's a reader whos opinion is being published. So the editor has the responsibility of cencoring all types of material that is to be published. Difficult. I hope we were able of helping them out a bit.
PaperAt least I got good (belarussian) feedback on my comments on their logo and use of type as well as the general layout of the frontpage. I also remembered that I made a few ads for the russian and belarussian market back in 1998. Fun experience of the day!

Authentic Master Delivered

Today I defended my master thesis with the title "Between Action and Meaning, on Authentic Organizational Identity" which I handed in a couple of weeks ago after three months of intense work (at home after work - so it's been pretty hectic). It was very well received - I got a lot of optimistic and encouraging comments on the way. In my thesis I have defined a new concept for understanding authenticity in corporations and a method of mapping authenticity. I'll write more about that soon - and as soon as time so allows I'll publish a rewritten edition of my master-thesis.

"First they ignore you - Then laugh at you and hate you - Then they fight you - then you win”

- Robbie Williams
Recently I have been working on creating promotion for one of our clients. And one of many steps in the process is to buy advertising space in several more or less well known magazines. My first time buying advertising space.. Piece of cake I believe. I am from Jutland – I am used to “different people - different prices” and expressions such as “you snooze you loose”.
It wasn’t quite as easy. It wasn’t the same as “Jallerupmarked”.Okay, at first there is a price. It’s sky-high and makes you believe that you’ve asked the price of the entire advertising space. In the world. “That’s the price, I’m afraid. We also have to make a living you know?”. Then you are shocked and confused and you try to rearrange the budget – but it’s a whole lot of rearrangement and the number on the last page still has to be the same.
Then you talk to your boss and he laughs at you and tell you “that’s the name of the game. You’ll have to push them down to the real price.” Oh, there’s a real price!? An authentic price… interesting! Then you call them again – slightly pissed. And suddenly they have a special offer for you because you are “a new costumer...calling so close to deadline…born in 1978 on a sunday…and stuff like that”. But it’s still not a fair price.
Then you spent a few days calling, mailing, play pretend, call back, pushing – fighting and squeezing the final offer out of your enemies. And then you win. And maybe so do they.
And you end up thinking if it is really worth the effort to have a person spending fulltime on battling costumers – and if his or hers time could be spent more reasonable on other things? And most likely your enemy thinks so too.

Master's out, colours are in!

Yesterday I gave in my master thesis at MMD at CBS. I've been working on it on and off for four month and then intensely for the past three weeks. And after I gave it in yesterday I just saw Mads and Rasmus' discussion about colours on our moblog. Check it out - there's more to be said in that debate! Why can't you choose any colour you like on your TV, dishwasher, scooter etc.? Comments here or join Mads and Rasmus on the moblog.Large_2

Talking about colours, I promise there's going to be a lot more talk about colours in the next few weeks. Birgitte, Lasse, Inger and myself are working on a great project with OKI. We are ready to show off next week!

The sun is shining on Exxon

Waoh! I´m definitly in the wrong industri! Clearly there´s much more money to be made in the energy business than in communications. This week american oil giant ExxonMobil presented it´s financial report from third quater of 2006. I imagine the members of the executive board were quite pleased with themselves, as the surplus reached a staggering 10,49 BILLION us dollars.
This means that in july, august and september, Exxon made 114 mio dollars. A day. That comes down to 4.75 mio an hour, 79.166 a minute or 1319 dollars every second, 24/7!
It´s an insane amount of money!

This makes me wonder: how do a large global corporation deal with the minor issue of social responsibility? Maybe it´s just me, but I don´t get the impression that the american oil industry is reknown for its contribution to the world´s sustainability - you know, with the fossile fuels, polution and all that other stuff, the lefties are going on and on about.
Nevertheless, companies like Exxon are making billions every year. Is this an example of a company legitamizing itself only by making profit?
Earns_exxon_mobile_156228c_1
Of course ExxonMobil is putting a lot of money into reseach on new energy technologies that can insure their position in the market when there is no more oil and gas to be extracted. In my opinion, this company is only driven by the need for profit. 20 years ago that wouldn´t have been a problem, but these days the privileged consumer is looking for more in a company. We want the large corporation to behave decently. We demand organic milk, non-gmo corn, and renewable energy sources.
But as the Exxon-case shows, companies can make a lot of money without marketing themselves as social responsible.
I don´t have a problem with Exxon making a lot of money. I just hope, that a large part of the 10 billion USD, that Exxon made in the third quarter of 2006 will be spend responsibly.

Design creates bottomline says Dansk Handel & Service

In the monthly newsletter from Danish Designers (which I'm a member of) journalist Helle Lorentzen refers to Dansk Handel & Service (trade organization) who's increasingly focusing on design in a wide understanding of the term. Design is not just clothing or graphic design (which was my original background) but also design of experiences, development processes and a way of expanding strategies into tangible support that help implementation.

"Today people think a lot about design. The design competence is a part of the development that companies has to go through and people are starting to see how design can be used to build competitive advantage by differentiating from others"
Heidi Schütt Larsen DHS

Many danish designers are - paradoxially - not very good at promoting themselves or establish an identity that convinces companies to see the upside of using their competencies. The design-industry is characterized by lots of small companies rather than big ones.

"One model could be more design companies with a mix of competencies - kind of a shopping mall or a package-deal. Small companies don't have the time or money to go to "boutique stores" and it can be difficult to find the right designer. In that area we miss some solutions to ease the way forward for the companies."Heidi Schütt Larsen DHS

I think we're one of those companies. We try to help our clients with a mix of competencies. And I think we're a place where companies get the counselling they need to go forward and design identity and experiences that create bottomline results.

To use Livas way of putting it from the other day:
"Hi, I'm a designer and I create bottomline"
