Going undercover

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation has launched a highly interesting new weekly documentary programme called “Undercover Chef” (meaning Undercover Boss in English). The show lets CEOs experience their own organization from a new point of view – that of their employees and costumers. The CEO plays the role of a new employee under a false name as his employees patiently introduce him to the work routines and daily life in his own organization.

Last week, the CEO of Danske Diakonhjem, which is an organization managing a chain of nursing homes, worked a few days as a health care worker. As the visibly emotional CEO was placed completely powerless in the stand-up lift that constitutes an indispensable part of many of the residents’ daily routines, it was clear that more was at stake than simple role play. This was a CEO achieving a deeper understanding of the emotional and social dynamics in the organization he manages, and he left the experience wiser and more aware of what matters most to his employees and costumers.

Very interesting, Katrine! I've only seen two of the programs and enjoyed them. One episode had the marketing director of Falck (rescue service) in it. He seemed to have a great time and see new perspectives as he was joining the staff rescuing animals and towing cars. But at the end when he joined the management team to reveal what he had learned, he commented on "the old brochures still laying around out there" (I'm paraphrasing here) and "selling more of the bonus-super-garage-service" or something like that. And I thought wow, is that all you found in your organization? No new insights that could turn around the way you market yourself or meet the staff or the customers? The program could use a helping hand at getting some meaningful learnings out of the experience but well... The initial idea is still great! I'll have to see the other episodes.

What made most of an impression on me in this particular episode was really how much it meant for the employees that their CEO took his time to thank them for their work. One of the employees who had worked there for years and years was moved to tears when she received a bouquet of flowers and a thank you from her boss. This really highlights the importance of affirmation at the workplace.

That's true... That makes a lot of sense. I guess the outburst in tears says a lot about how unusual that is for people in general and that employee in particular when the CEO takes time to appreciate and see who that person really is. I'm sure there is a lot of energy and potential development that would be unleashed in so many places and companies if managers would take out more time to go see the people in the organization...
